Signs and symptoms of cockroach infestations

Cockroaches are indeed one of the most annoying insects ubiquitously found in most homes. Cockroaches may be classified as nocturnal creatures and they generally choose to hide in dark, moist, filthy and unsanitary places. Cockroaches have an innate capability to flatten their bodies and this helps them to creep into narrow crevices, Cockroaches mostly hide beneath rubber mats, behind wallpaper, sinks and wall cracks. It is said that if you see one cockroach, there are a lot more that you don’t see. Cockroach controls can be effective only if you target places they are likely to concentrate.

These insects are reasonably large and quite distinctive and can therefore be easily identified. Between half an inch and two inches long, cockroaches have elongated bodies and are colored light or dark brown or black. Along with six legs they also possess a set of long antennae – these features make identifying a cockroach a simple affair.

It is important to know about the signs of cockroach infestation. Given the fact that cockroaches are nocturnal creatures and normally stay hidden during daylight hours, knowing how to recognize other signs of cockroach infestation is essential. However, when a very severe infestation is present, cockroaches can be spotted during the day. The more severe the infestation, the more cockroach sightings are likely during daytime. Detection is the key component of cockroach control. Fortunately, cockroaches leave some sure signs of infestation.

Cockroach feces are usually visible when there is cockroach infestation. Small cockroaches deposit feces, which resemble coffee seeds or black pepper. Bigger cock roaches expel cylindrical droppings. The quantum of feces is often a foolproof indicator of the extent of infestation.

This apart, many cockroaches emit bad odor called pheromones. Once you detect a repulsive, oily or musty odor, rest assured there is serious cockroach infestation. Look for bodies of dead cockroaches which may be yet another sign of cockroach infestation. One of the most recognizable signs that cockroaches are present in your premises is the presence of shell casings. These are egg cases that appear as small dark brown oval-shaped casings. Oval-shaped egg cases, known as oothecae, will be visible if you search behind furniture, around the sinks, book shelves and such other hidden locations.

Cockroach insecticides include residual sprays, non-residual sprays, dusts and baits. You can opt for a combination of any of these for effective chemical cockroach control. If you wish to avoid insecticides, you can also consider a biological control program.

Once you are sure that you have identified a cockroach infestation within your home, contact the pest control professionals to arrange inspection and explore extermination options. The three important keys to effective cockroach management are prevention and sanitation, detection and chemical control.

Prevention is better than cure. Appropriate steps should be taken to prevent any cockroach population from infesting your home. Dishes should be thoroughly washed and put away neatly. Food remnants should never be left on counters or tables or in the sinks. Defective plumbing and potential leaks should be corrected and garbage should be removed as frequently as possible. All holes and cracks and crevices in ceilings and walls should be instantly plugged. Any signs of large scale cockroach infestation should be dealt with appropriately by engaging the services of a pest control company.
