Given that it’s in the name, it should be no surprise that bed bugs are primarily found in beds, usually in motels, hotel rooms, and hostels. But that’s far from the only stomping ground these little pests tend to hang around in. They can just as easily lurk in your own home, and they don’t just stick to the bed there, either.
Here, we’re going to take a look at where bed bugs tend to hide, as well as what kind of spaces they prefer and why, exactly, they prefer them.
Where do bed bugs live and hide?
Yes, bed bugs do tend to live and hide in bed mattresses a lot, but that’s not even the most common hiding places for them. In fact, one study saw that box springs, couches, and chairs are all much more common hiding places for them than mattresses
Besides mattresses, bed bugs can also be found in the frame of your bed and headboard, so don’t think that replacing the mattress itself will be enough to rid you of them. But they can be found outside of the bedroom, too, in finished basements, attics, inside walls, in crawl spaces, and anywhere else they can infiltrate.
Bed bugs can also choose some surprising temporary hiding spots. These include car seats, truck cabs, door moldings, toy boxes, storage cupboards and more. Simply put, there are few places that a bed bug won’t hide, given the opportunity.

Where do bed bugs avoid?
Usually, bed bugs don’t tend to live in unfinished basements, bathrooms, garages, unfurnished rooms, or rooms that aren’t typically used. If you do find them in those areas, then it could actually be a sign of a very advanced infestation, one that immediately needs the help of pest control to take care of it.
Unlike many other small pests, damp, dark spots are not preferable for the bed bug and will tend to avoid living in “wet rooms” as a result.
Where do bed bugs lay eggs?
If you have an infestation of bed bugs, you might be just as worried about where they’re reproducing as well as where they’re hiding. In most cases, the answer to where they live and where they lay eggs are one and the same.
Bed bugs select harborages where they live, hide, sleep, digest and lay their eggs. The mattress might be the favourite home, but box springs, bed frames, attics, inside walls, and the like work just as well. If a bed bug has laid eggs and you find it, you’re likely to find its eggs with it, too.
Where do bed bugs come from?
A common misconception is that bed bugs are attracted to filth. Your home could be spotless and they’ll still make a home there. They’re coming for you (and your blood), after all.
Bed bug cross infestation can happen anywhere, from anywhere. They can hitch a ride on your clothes, on your shoes, on your bag. If you travel frequently, go to the cinema, sit on the bus, ride a car, or lounge anywhere outside the house in general, there’s a chance you will pick up a bed bug on the way. At Avon Pest Control, we can serve you the cure to a bed bug infestation but we believe that prevention is better than a cure.
How do I get rid of bed bugs?
Given that they can be next to impossible to notice and can live and hide in such a variety of places, you might think that getting rid of bed bugs in the home could be next to impossible. If you’re relying on DIY methods, that’s likely to be true. Not only can they hide in a lot of places, but the most common pesticides for indoor use will only eradicate the adults, but not pupae and larvae.
